How to scan a QR code on iPhone

Every recent iPhone can read QR codes without an extra app. Here are the three built-in ways, plus the online scanner below for photos and screenshots.

Step by step

How to do it

  1. Open the Camera app

    Use the rear camera in Photo mode. You do not need to press the shutter button.

  2. Point it at the QR code

    Hold the phone steady so the whole code is inside the frame. A yellow link or notification appears above the code.

  3. Tap the banner

    Safari opens the link, or iOS offers the matching action: join Wi-Fi, add a contact or create a calendar event.

  4. Scanning a saved photo?

    Open it in Photos, then touch and hold the QR code (Live Text on iOS 15 and later), or upload it to the scanner on this page.

Does the iPhone have a built-in QR scanner?

Yes. The Camera app reads QR codes automatically, and there is also a dedicated Code Scanner you can add to Control Centre.

How do I scan a QR code from a screenshot on iPhone?

Open the screenshot in Photos and touch and hold the code, or upload the screenshot to the Image tab of the scanner on this page. It is decoded in your browser and never uploaded to a server.
